Take a closer look at Uganda’s wildlife and you will find an array of creatures that are less than attractive.

From the Warthog to hyenas with their appalling laugh, these animals are often misunderstood and disliked.

Regardless, they are an important part of the Ugandan ecosystem, playing critical roles in the survival of other species.

These animals are unfortunately not as cute and cuddly as the country’s more popular safari animals, but they are just as important for preserving Uganda’s ecological integrity.

They are also just as threatened by poaching and habitat loss, so it is important to learn about them and do what we can to protect them.

So next time you are in Uganda, be sure to keep an open mind and appreciate these ugly five for the fascinating creatures they are.

In this blog article, we explore them as follows;

These creatures usually travel in groups and spend the majority of their time looking for food.

Warthogs are members of the pig family, and they may be found all over Africa.

These animals sleep underground in burrows stolen from other species like the aardvark.

Their tails stand up straight when running over grass, and when in danger, these creatures prefer to flee rather than fight.

No, hyenas belong to their own family, the Hyaenidae, which includes carnivorous mammals.

The striped hyena, the spotted hyena, the brown hyena, and the aardwolf – are all members of this family.

The bone-crushing fangs of these creatures are unique, allowing them to smash the entire skeleton of prey as large as wildebeest.

There is no set breeding season for hyenas. Cubs of spotted hyenas are born with their eyes open and black fur that gradually lightens and becomes speckled.

What kind of connection could a marabou stork and a bee have?

The stork cuts up the animal it consumes with its saw-like bill. As a result, certain bees can exploit the animal carcass for egg-laying and nourishment.

Because of its appearance, the marabou stork has been dubbed “the undertaker bird.” The bird’s back and wings seem cloak-like when viewed from behind.

It has thin, hollow, and white legs. Marabou storks have hollow toe bones in addition to their hollow legs.

The hippopotamus (The Ugly 5)

The hippopotamus is one of the world’s five ugliest creatures.

Their behavior, not just their appearance, is what makes them so unappealing. Hippos are territorial and aggressive, and they can be hazardous.

The hippo is a big herbivorous animal that can weigh up to 2,000 pounds and reach a length of sixteen feet.

It has a huge head with a projecting lower jaw and a wide, short body. Its hair is short and scant, and its skin is gritty.

These are frequently spotted during the well-known Great Wilderbeest Migration, in which the animals migrate in a circle between Tanzania and Kenya in response to seasonal rains, even if it means traversing through perilous terrain.

Wildebeest are one of the largest antelope and are known for their disproportional bodies.

The name wildebeest comes from a Dutch word that means “wild beast” or “wild cattle,” and it is native to Africa.

The wildebeest has a physical appearance that is a mix of three species of animals. Its head is that of an ox, its mane that of a horse, and its horns that of a buffalo.

The Vulture

To complete this Ugly 5 list, let us throw in the vulture.

While the official member of the Ugly Five is the lappet-faced vulture, any vulture could be a member of the group.

Their work as scavengers in cleaning up the carcasses of dead animals leaves something to be desired. They’re huge in size, but not so much in appearance.
